home about recent posts contact website rhs chelsea flower show 2018 following a beautifully elegant and white floral royal wedding at windsor, a walk down sloane street to sloane square in london you are immediately hit by the amazing colourful floral displays outside many of the shops as well as in the centre of the square, all part of chelsea in bloom and you definitely know that this is time for for the rhs chelsea flower show. colourful shop display outside the florist moyses stevens ' the heart arch' display in sloane square as part of chelsea in bloom a floral drinks van from the botanist so what can you expect this year at chelsea flower show sponsored by m & g investments and what are the highlights? thankfully there has been a return in part to a more natural style of planting in some of the show gardens, lots and lots of lupins everywhere, a floral marquee bursting with some incredible blooms from independent nurseries and impressive trade stands selling everything from ceramic fruit to sheep wool blended compost. chelsea flower show is the catwalk of flower shows with big budgets for the larger show gardens. there are amazing buildings, hard landscaping and plants that have been grown or sourced to perfection. some of the gardens highlight and communicate messages from charities( supershoes is a wonderful charity highlighting children's cancer), others have been sponsored by finance companies, drinks companies or tourist boards like the yorkshire garden. the smaller gardens are always very popular and more achievable to the gardener although with all the show gardens, you have to keep in mind that this is a show full of buried pots which are closely packed together in a higher density than you would normally find in a traditional garden. below is a small taster of what stood out for me this year on a brief visit. probably one of the most memorable pictures of chelsea this year was from the david harber sculpture garden blue was a dominant feature in gardens this year and the meconopsis shone out in the morgan stanley garden fell in love with this wonderful velvety sumptuous bearded iris 'black swan' that was part of the rhs feel good garden one of the main highlights of chelsea has to be the lovely artisan gardens which are smaller and more achievable for most gardeners. but the most spectacular is always the offering from the incredible japanese. the hospitality garden o-me-te-na-shi no niwa is simply breathtaking, so serene and you don't quite know where to look first.the back of the garden which isn't seen unless you walk behind, is just as wonderful as the front with amazing detail. acers, trees, ferns and moss smother the high walls and you can understand why this garden won gold and best in show in it's category. and although i was looking rather worse than wear, i was very happy to see my friend ian drummond from indoor garden design who co created a workspace space with ikea showing how indoor plants used in a home office environment can provide a range of physical and psychological benefits. i have worked with ian recently co designing an installation as part of the chelsea fringe at the iconic entrance to the zetter townhouse in clerkenwell. "the geranium at the door" installation which is up until the end of june,is decorated in an eclectic way to suit the hotels interior. geraniums from pelargonium europe in a range of vivid colours, adorn the arch high above the doorway and spill onto the pavement below. this quintessential popular urban bedding plant has been used in an alternative way to the normal window box treatment and zetter hotel are offering a special floral inspired cocktail to celebrate. posted by claudia de yong | permalink | comments (0) reblog (0) | | | | | saturday, 19 may 2018 rhs malvern spring festival may is my favourite time of the year as the road verges are full of cow parsley and wild flowers, the fruit trees are heavy with wonderful blossom and it means that malvern spring festival is taking place. as i head through the herefordshire country lanes on the way to the malvern hills, i have to keep stopping the car and getting out to take pictures of the orchards which are so beautiful, heaving with fruit blossom and also full of fluffy lambs and their mothers. i am always full of excitement when i come to the three counties showground as the setting is simply stunning and this permanent site nestles in a valley surrounded by the majestic malvern hills. the rhs malvern spring festival theme this year is inspired by the great exhibition of 1851 celebrating the way innovation and horticulture has enriched our lives. with this in mind i have selected a few highlights from the show below. apart from the 10 lovely show gardens this year, there is a new category called green living space with four designs created for the millennial generation. the wonderful floral marquee is a must for plant lovers and there is also a plant arcade as well as lots of smaller independent nursery stands. there is a country living tent, a grow and cook theatre, the great pavilion of art and flowers, the school gardens which are always popular, an eco green living and festival theatre, as well as the many trade stands, local crafts guilds and the world's first knitted garden! i always head straight away for the floral marquee which is like a sweet shop full of wonderful nurseries, many of whom have introduced new varieties of plants that are being shown at malvern for the very first time. each nursery creates small displays which are so cleverly thought through, some with water features, others with gates, tables and chairs, small path ways and even little buildings. love this new gem called cumbrian cartwheels from east of eden nursery lovely display of small alpines and woodland plants from tale valley nursery some of the show gardens are lucky to borrow the view and peter dowle captures the hills beautifully behind his creations at malvern. this year the wonderful sculpture by simon gudgeon took centre stage as you can see below. apart from wonderful views and sculpture in gardens sometimes you come across goats! in the village verde garden below, you could be forgiven that you have just walked in on a rural scene in portugal, a goat herder's cave to be exact. going to shows and open gardens we often pick up ideas which we can take back and use in our own gardens and malvern this year didn't disappoint especially in the small creative urban green living spaces gardens in association with london stone and hortus loci. upcycled furniture and living pictures clever use of space by using the wall to grow salad and herbs in an aesthetic and sustainable way never say you can't find a place for plants - succulents look great in a slot on a wall in this small garden there are so many interesting trade stands at malvern and if you are looking for a greenhouse then look no further than the contemporary beautifully crafted aluminium and engineered timber glasshouses from cultivar lastly there are some things you really don't expect to come across at a flower show like characters from the amazing television hit allo allo. posted by claudia de yong | permalink | comments (0) reblog (0) | | | | | sunday, 13 may 2018 ascot spring garden show april 13th-15th the inaugural ascot spring garden show took place in april this year (13th-15th april 2018) and i was invited by the association of professional landscapers to design an interactive garden space which would show the public the construction methods that landscapers use to build certain areas of a garden. this small space was a usable back garden area, divided into a small paved front patio complete with a lovely long table and benches from garden trading, on to a small brick paved area with a scented pergola. this then led you onto a lawned area which in turn led up to a raised deck with a beautiful gothic style shed kindly supplied by the posh shed company beautiful tools and accessories
